The Pod Network has formally terminated its contract with “Machong Chismisan,” effective immediately, following the controversy surrounding remarks made by the podcast’s hosts about Kris Aquino’s son, Joshua, who is on the autism spectrum.

The decision came after the podcast drew widespread criticism online, with celebrities and netizens condemning the remarks and calling for greater sensitivity and respect toward persons with disabilities.

The controversy prompted actor and comedian John “Sweet” Lapus to speak out against making fun of people on the autism spectrum, emphasizing that they deserve understanding and compassion rather than ridicule.

The Autism Society Philippines likewise issued a statement reminding content creators and podcasters that “Disability is not a punchline.” The organization cited Republic Act No. 7277, or the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons, underscoring the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

Amid the backlash, one of the Machong Chismisan co-hosts issued a public apology, acknowledging that his remarks had hurt people on the autism spectrum and their families. He disclosed that he has ADHD but stressed that his condition did not excuse what he had said. He also apologized to his fellow hosts and others affected by the controversy, adding that he would seek professional guidance to become more accountable.

Although the original podcast video was reportedly taken down, copies have continued to circulate online.

While comedy allows room for creative expression, critics emphasize that humor should never come at the expense of another person’s dignity, particularly those who may be vulnerable to discrimination. (O. Recabar/ Malaya)
