“I think sometimes, loving someone also means knowing when to let go.”
With those words, Bela Padilla announced the end of her relationship with businessman Martin Tan, just weeks after the two confirmed their romance.
In an Instagram post on Sunday, Bela said she had decided for both of them to “move forward separately to save whatever we can of ourselves and how we see each other.”
She described her relationship with Tan as different, calling it the first one in which she was “truly swept off my feet.”
“We share the same love for films, food markets, our work, and, most of all, genuinely being together,” she wrote.
Bela said she kept the relationship private because it was also the first romance in which she felt both “most like and unlike” herself.
Videos of the couple at Legazpi Market that circulated online recently gave the public a glimpse of them as a new, shy and slightly awkward couple. But behind those moments, Bela said, were months filled with both “the best and also hardest days” of their relationship.
“I think sometimes, loving someone also means knowing when to let go, before you lose the good things you saw in each other,” she wrote.
Bela had nothing but kind words for Martin, calling him one of the “most fun, smartest, and definitely most charming” people she has ever met. She said she will always be grateful for what they shared and genuinely wished him the best.
She also thanked their followers for rooting for them from afar and for giving them space whenever they were spotted together.
Now, she is asking for that same space as they move forward separately.
In a postscript, Bela shared a video of the two together, seemingly without a care in the world. She said that if she could immortalize one night, it would be “this lovely, ordinary one.” (Malaya Entertainment)
