GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines early Saturday, prompting tsunami warnings across several countries and triggering an emergency response from Philippine authorities.

The earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m. local time off the coast of General Santos City on the island of Mindanao, according to Philippine seismologists. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the quake originated at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres beneath the seabed.

Authorities confirmed at least one fatality following the earthquake, while four other people were reported injured. Emergency crews were assessing damage and responding to reports from affected communities as aftershocks continued to be monitored.

Tsunami warnings were issued in multiple countries across the region, including the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan, amid concerns that the powerful undersea earthquake could generate dangerous waves along coastlines.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the national government had mobilized emergency resources and instructed agencies to respond immediately to the disaster.

“I have directed all relevant government agencies to act immediately,” Marcos said in a statement, while urging residents in vulnerable coastal areas to move to higher ground and follow instructions from local authorities.

Residents in parts of Mindanao reported strong shaking, with people evacuating homes, offices and public buildings as a precaution. Authorities continued to assess infrastructure, transportation networks and coastal communities for possible damage.

The earthquake is among the strongest to strike the region in recent years. The Philippines sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity, making earthquakes a recurring threat throughout the archipelago.

Officials warned that the situation remains fluid and urged the public to monitor official advisories as emergency assessments continue.
