TWELVE years into his career, Joshua Garcia admitted that some parts of acting still make him uncomfortable — especially filming intimate scenes.
Now starring in “Love Is Never Gone” alongside Ivana Alawi, Joshua revealed that while romantic scenes may look natural onscreen, they are far from easy for him personally.
“Actually, hindi ako comfortable doing love scene, like showing my body,” Joshua admitted during the recent Star Magic Spotlight at Dolphy Theater in Quezon City. “Hindi ako comfortable sa camera.”
The actor even shared that he speaks directly with cameramen during shoots about the angles he prefers.
“Kinakausap ko ’yung mga cameraman namin,” he said. “‘Iwasan mo ’yung tiyan ko.’”
Still, Joshua said rapport between actors became essential in making intimate scenes work naturally onscreen.
“I think malaking factor doon talaga kasi na open both actors para mag-work ’yung eksena,” he explained.
What surprised him most was how quickly that trust developed with Ivana.
“Never kami nagkaroon ng meeting bago magsimula,” he revealed. “Pagkita namin diretso kami agad sa eksena.”
Even without lengthy preparation, Joshua said he immediately saw Ivana’s willingness to collaborate.
“Nakita ko na rin talaga sa kanya na sobrang open niya sa mga eksena,” he shared. “Siya pa mismo nagsasabi kay Direk, ‘Ano gusto mong gawin ko dito?’ Talagang kita mong focus ’yun sa ginagawa niya.”
Joshua added that understanding the emotional progression of a scene also helped remove awkwardness while filming.
“Every love scene naman may pinanggagalingan,” he said. “‘Yung scene na ginawa namin bago mag-love scene mahaba siya talaga.”
Because of that emotional buildup, Joshua said the scenes eventually felt natural.
“Hindi naman siya awkward,” Joshua explained. “As Theo, of course, wala namang tumatakbong iba sa isipan ko.”
Beyond filming love scenes, Joshua also reflected on how his understanding of acting itself has changed over the years.
He admitted that years ago, he dreamed of taking on darker psychological roles.
“Nung una, nung before like five years ago, gusto kong makagawa ng psycho role kasi syempre, as an actor, gusto mong mabaliw ka,” he said.
But after more than a decade in the industry, Joshua realized how emotionally demanding acting already is on its own.
“Mahirap palang mabaliw,” he admitted. “Nakakabaliw na rin talaga maging actor.”
He described how actors are constantly required to shift between emotions while filming scenes.
“Pinaglalaruan ’yung emotion mo,” Joshua shared. “After mong umiyak biglang tatawa ka, the next biglang iiyak ka. So nakakabaliw din siya talaga.”
Because of that realization, Joshua said his priorities as an actor have evolved. Rather than simply chasing difficult roles, he now values strong storytelling and meaningful material more than anything else.
“Ngayon parang mas nagfo-focus ako doon sa mas magandang materyal, mas magandang istorya,” he said. (Malaya)
