Filipino Heritage Month is observed every June across Canada, coinciding with Philippine Independence Day on June 12. It was first celebrated in Toronto in 2018, following a grassroots initiative led by community leader Paulina Corpuz, who petitioned for official recognition through the support of local politicians and organizations. The House of Commons passed Motion M-155 on October 30, 2018, formally designating June as Filipino Heritage Month nationwide, with Ontario following through provincial legislation in 2021.
Purpose and Significance
The month honors the vibrant Filipino-Canadian community, which is one of the fastest-growing immigrant populations in Canada, numbering over one million people. It recognizes their contributions across sectors such as healthcare, education, arts, entrepreneurship, social justice, and public service. Filipino Heritage Month also serves to preserve cultural traditions, strengthen community identity, and educate all Canadians about Filipino history and values www.canada.ca+2.
