The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Tuesday pressed the Senate to promptly convene as an impeachment court for Vice President Sara Duterte, cautioning that delays could erode public confidence in constitutional institutions.
In a pastoral statement, the CBCP said the House of Representatives had already acted on the impeachment complaint, voting by more than the required one-third of its members after finding probable cause, and was set to transmit the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate.
The statement, titled “Serve the Common Good in the Pursuit of Justice and Truth,” was dated May 12, 2026 and signed by CBCP president Archbishop Gilbert A. Garcera of Lipa.
The bishops appealed to senators to fulfill their constitutional duty, urging them to “abide by what the Constitution directs” once the impeachment articles are received for trial.
They also reminded lawmakers to avoid any action that could be interpreted as evading or delaying their responsibility, saying this could weaken trust in democratic processes.
The CBCP made its appeal amid political tension following changes in Senate leadership, with concerns raised by various sectors over possible delays or procedural moves affecting the impeachment proceedings.
It stressed that the Senate should convene the impeachment court “at the soonest possible time,” noting that postponement would also delay the resolution of the case and accountability mechanisms under the Constitution.
The bishops ended their statement by calling on the public to remain vigilant and prayerful, asking Filipinos to stay engaged in the proceedings and invoking the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima for guidance over the country’s leaders and institutions. (CBCP news)
