14 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many [a]mansions; if it were not so, [b]I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. John 14: 1-3, NKJV
The Cross was looming on the horizon as Jesus was giving His instructions to the disciples. Judas Iscariot had already made a deal with the clergy, headed by the high priest, to betray his master and was only waiting for the opportune time to carry out his plan for just 30 pieces of silver. (Matthew 26:15).
When Jesus was crucified, His followers forgot the promise of His return. To them, all hope was lost. They forgot what He told them that He would die but would rise again on the third day because He was the Resurrection and the Life. This month, Easter was celebrated, but the one who got the most spotlight was Mary, the Lord’s human mother.
When the Holy Spirit was given to the disciples, John and all the disciples remembered all the words that Jesus had spoken since they were called as disciples. He remembered this specific promise of Jesus second coming found in John 14: 1-3. 14 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many [a]mansions; if it were not so, [b]I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. John 14: 1-3, NKJV Some versions say, “in my Father’s house are many rooms” but I prefer the “mansions” which are more splendid than just rooms.
In theFundamental Beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist church #24 is this statement. “The Second Coming of Christ is the blessed Hope of the Church, the grand climax of the gospel. The Saviour’s coming will be literal, personal, visible, and worldwide. When He returns, the righteous dead will be resurrected, and together with the righteous living will be glorified and taken to heaven, but the unrighteous will die. The almost complete fulfilment of most lines of prophecy, together with the present condition of the world, indicates that Christ’s coming is imminent. The time of that event has not been revealed, and we are therefore exhorted to be ready at all times.”
(See 1 Corinthians 15: 51-57, and 1 Thessalonians 4: 14-18 for the description of Christ’s coming.)
