Blessing of the Pets.– In celebration of St. Francis of Assisi Day (Oct 4) , Rev. Expedito Farinas gathered the pets, their guardians, and member of the congregation for the annual Blessing of Pets. Rev. Farinas went around the circle, blessed and sprinkled holy water at the pet and its family. Rev. Farinas called out each pet by name and blessed the pet and its owner that both of them “enjoy life together and find joy with the God who created you.”
Max, Zorro, Zulie, Chia, Lady Luz were front and centre or peering through their carriers with their proud guardians. Also remembered were other beloved pets, like Roney II, who have passed.
Thanksgiving for Mary Jane Veloso’s release.– Migrante Sunday Mass on Oct 18 was a service to express thanksgiving and prayers for the unconditional release of Mary Jane Veloso after 16 years behind prisons bars in Indonesia and the Philippines. Mary Jane was as a victim of labour trafficking and her release is the committed and sustained support and campaign of Migrante International and its chapters, the National Union of Peoples Lawyers and the friend and allies in the global Migrants movement. St Mary the Virgin South Hill church has been a long supporter of Mary Jane Veloso and the campaigns for her freedom.
Labour trafficking continues as shown in the recent case of the HHIS 17 workers who suffered from the hands of fraudulent recruiters. The HHIS workers joined Migrante BC and Damayan for the joint Sunday service and fellowship. HHIS is the Helping Hands Immigration Services.
