CHRISTIAN Bables doesn’t hide the fact he’s a favorite staple in many blind items questioning his sexual orientation. But coming across them does not bother the award-winning actor a bit, he confessed in an interview with Push.
“Hindi dahil wala along pakialam, kundi patuloy na paniniwalaan ng tao ang gusto nilang paniwalaan (It’s not because I don’t care at all, but because people will still believe what they want to believe),” Bables said.
He has accepted there’s no way he can change their line of thinking. “Sa akin, okey lang. Hindi ako apektado sa mga naririnig ko (In my case, it’s fine with me. I never get affected by what I hear). Kahit tumambling ka diyan, dukutin mo man ang eyeball mo sa eye socket mo (Whether you do cartwheels or gouge out your eye), you cannot change people’s perception of you!”
Bables’ logical take on this comes from understanding other people’s standards. “If this is their standard in determining who’s straight and who’s not, let it stay that way. No matter what you do, you’ll only end up frustrated.”
Not only is he able to understand the yawning chasm in people’s mindsets, “It’s also a matter of respecting them. If they say that he’s like that, who are we to question their standards? But let me be clear on this… one’s sexuality is none of your business.”
There are obvious exceptions though to this devil-may-care attitude. “Unless you’re interested in marrying that person, or extracting information about him will do you good, you don’t ask such questions.”
The bottom line, Bables stressed, is this. “Hindi naman ikaw ang magmamahal sa taong ‘yon, hindi ikaw ang may kakaibang preference kundi sila (It’s not you who is in love with that person, nor is it you with a different preference, but them). Give it to them. That’s their thing to keep. Again, it’s none of our business.”
A staunch ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, he considers his involvement in this societal sector as his personal advocacy.
“Never get tired of standing up and fighting for what you believe is right. No one will stand up for us except us ourselves,” he said.
