Filipino Community Rallies Behind Three Candidates at Surrey Meet & Greet

SURREY, BC – Unity, community engagement, and civic participation took center stage as members of the Filipino community gathered for a successful Meet & Greet on Sunday, July 26, 2026, in support of three Filipino candidates running in Surrey’s upcoming civic election.

The event was organized and was hosted by Carlo Bernabe,

owner of ACTFAST Restoration at the company’s office and warehouse in Surrey and also Marlon Parel, President of MINDS (Multicultural Inclusion for Neurodiversity and Development Society),.

The gathering introduced the community to three Filipino candidates seeking public office:

• Noemi Victorino – Candidate for Surrey City Councillor
• Dr. Michelle Ceniza – Candidate for Surrey School Board Trustee
• Vanessa Cruz Gilera – Candidate for Surrey School Board Trustee

Each candidate shared their qualifications, vision, and commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive Surrey. They encouraged residents to become active participants in the democratic process by registering to vote, staying informed, and supporting leaders who are committed to serving the community.

In his welcome remarks, Carlo Bernabe thanked everyone for attending and expressed his pride in opening the doors of ACT FAST Restoration to an event that promotes community unity, leadership, and public service. He reaffirmed his company’s commitment to supporting worthwhile community initiatives beyond its business operations.

A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation by MINDS (Multicultural Inclusion for Neurodiversity and Development Society). President Marlon Parel shared the organization’s mission of promoting inclusion, awareness, advocacy, education, and support for neurodiverse individuals and their families. He emphasized the importance of creating a community where everyone is accepted, respected, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of ability or background.

The event also served as an opportunity for community leaders, business owners, volunteers, and residents to network and discuss ways to strengthen the Filipino community’s voice and participation in local government.

The program was professionally emceed by Mary Mellari, while guests enjoyed refreshments, fellowship, networking, and live entertainment by Raffy Mellari & Band, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the afternoon.

As Surrey continues to grow as one of Canada’s most diverse cities, the Meet & Greet demonstrated the increasing involvement of Filipino-Canadians in civic affairs. Organizers expressed hope that the event would inspire more members of the community to vote, volunteer, and support qualified Filipino leaders seeking public office.

The gathering concluded with a group photo, fellowship, and renewed optimism that, through unity and active civic engagement, the Filipino community can continue to make meaningful contributions to the future of Surrey.
