Eala still grateful to Venus

NOT for lack of desire but apparently out of mutual choice, Alex Eala and revered American legend Venus Williams decided not to renew their doubles partnership for the Mubadala DC Open, according to the Filipina sports star.

“You know this is the first week coming back. So, I think Venus is someone who deserves a partner that can give their all physically, emotionally and mentally,” Eala acknowledged in the Tennis Legends Youtube Channel video that was streamed yesterday (Monday in the US).

“I think right now I can only do that for singles,” she added of her debut in the WTA 500 meet to be held in the American capital.

“I don’t have the capacity yet to give that in both singles and doubles so I am really grateful for the opportunity that I have (with Venus), and hopefully we see more of it in the future,” said the Pinay netter of her initial partnership with the multiple Grand Slam champion in the Bad Homburg Open in Bad Homburg, Germany during the pro tour’s grasscourt swing in Europe.

Wiliams was “re-paired” with Diana Shnaider as her new doubles partner.

Nonetheless, Eala had nothing but good words about the older of the tennis-playing Williams siblings, declaring “I have too much respect for Venus. I am so grateful for every opportunity to be around her, to learn from her, to hit with her.”

Back in action after a brief break back home, Eala revealed what her expectations was about her maiden appearance in the tournament featuring Fil-Canadian defending champion Leylah Fernandez.

“I am trying to get my groove back. I am trying to ease myself back into rhythm of competition. For now I am taking it match by match,” added Eala, who was set to clash with Paris Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen of China in the opening round. (B. Pedralvez/ Malaya)
