Every community has individuals whose lives remind us that dreams are not confined by geography, family background, or circumstance. For the inaugural edition of Community Spotlight, we are proud to feature Atty. Karen Joy Bation, a Filipino-Canadian lawyer whose journey from a quiet rural municipality in the Philippines to the courtrooms of British Columbia stands as a testament to perseverance, discipline, and an unwavering devotion to public service.
Born and raised in the Province of Zamboanga del Norte, Karen’s story began far from the skyline of Vancouver and the halls of Canadian courthouses. She grew up in the Municipality of Tampilisan, a modest community where hard work was never an occasional choice but a daily way of life.
A family Built on Faith, Discipline and Love
If Karen’s achievements have roots, they run deep into the soil of a remarkable family, one whose story is, in many ways, the truest explanation of her success.
Her greatest teacher was her father, Jacinto “Jack” Bation, a retired member of the Philippine Armed Forces whose discipline shaped the very foundation of her life. While many children were still asleep, Karen was already awake before sunrise, studying before school began, and returning to her books when classes ended, for she had learned early that education was the one opportunity no one could ever take away.
Her mother, the beautiful Myrna Bation, a retired public school teacher, gave the family its heart and its love of learning. It was in her mother’s world of classrooms and lessons that a very young Karen first discovered the stage singing and dancing before an audience by the age of two. That stage became her first classroom, teaching her confidence, communication, and the courage to stand before a crowd, gifts she would one day carry into courtrooms and public service. At that age, she could not have imagined she would one day become a lawyer in another country.
Together, Jack and Myrna raised not one but a family of achievers, bound by a simple and unbreakable creed: faith, discipline, respect, perseverance, and the commitment to help one another rise.
At the very center of the Bation home was faith in God. Sunday after Sunday, the family worshipped together, and service to the church became woven into the fabric of their upbringing. Karen’s brothers served at the altar as altar boys, and Karen carried that same faith into her schooling, attending a Catholic school through her high school years. It was this grounding (a belief in God, and in something greater than oneself) that gave the family’s discipline its purpose and its heart. To this day, Karen credits her faith as the quiet source of strength behind every milestone she has reached.
Karen is the eldest — and she has always understood what that means. Her brother, Engr. Jacinto “Jun” Bation, carries their father’s name and the family’s discipline into a career in engineering. Her youngest brother, Atty. Karl (Alvin) Bation, followed a path close to Karen’s own and joined her in the legal profession. A soldier, a teacher, an engineer, and two lawyers, one family, one foundation.
Ask the Bation siblings the secret of their success, and the answer comes without hesitation: the faith that anchored them all, the discipline instilled by their father, the respect and grace modeled by their mother, the perseverance tested by circumstance, and a loyalty to one another that never wavered. “We help each other,” Karen says. “And as the eldest, I lead.”
A Calling to Serve:
Long before she immigrated to Canada in July 2016, Karen had already devoted herself to her hometown in Tampilisan, first as a Municipal Councilor, and later as Vice Mayor. For her, politics was never about power. It was about helping people, solving problems, and giving a voice to those who often had none.
Beginning Again:
When she arrived in Canada, Karen (like so many immigrants) had to begin again. She faced the uncertainty of starting over in a new country, adapting to a different culture, and rebuilding a professional career from the ground up. Rather than allowing those challenges to define her, she embraced them as opportunities to grow. Her early work advocating for migrant workers deepened her understanding of the struggles newcomers face and strengthened her resolve to serve the community she had joined.
With determination, countless hours of study, and the mentorship of some of British Columbia’s most respected legal minds, Karen reached a milestone few could have imagined when she left Tampilisan: she became a lawyer in Canada.
A Firm Built on Compassion:
Today, Karen is the founder of KJB Law Firm, where she guides clients through immigration, family law, and access to justice with compassion and integrity. She is proud to be recognized as the first Filipino-Canadian lawyer from the Province of Zamboanga del Norte carrying with her the hopes of a community that rarely saw one of its own reach such heights.
But ask Karen which accomplishment matters most, and she is unlikely to mention titles or awards. She will speak, instead, about service.
A Heart for Community:
Her heart has always belonged to the community. As the Charter President of the Rotary Club of Vancouver Mountainview, she continues to lead projects that support newcomers, families, youth, and charitable initiatives. Whether providing legal assistance by volunteering at BC Access Pro Bono, The Philippine Consulate- Vancouver, mentoring aspiring professionals, volunteering at community events, or speaking to inspire the next generation, she believes that leadership is measured not by status but by impact. Success, she often says, means very little unless it is shared with others.
Her life reminds us that immigrants do not simply build new lives, they build stronger communities. They bring resilience, compassion, and the courage to dream beyond borders.
