What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? Mark 8: 36-37, ESV
26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Matthew 16: 26, NKJV
This teaching of Jesus was given to His disciples a few days before His crucifixion. It doesn’t matter whether a man or a woman is a multibillionaire if he or she does not measure up to the standard of God; he or she will not be saved. His or her billions won’t be able to save the individual.
To God, every soul is valuable; that is why Jesus gave up His kingly glory and came down to earth to live as a human in order to redeem humanity from the effects of sin. The Bible says, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.” But because God loved His creation that was made in His image so much, He sent His only begotten Son to this earth to die for man’s sin. Imagine that? In His midnight interview with Nicodemus, He this famous verse. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life“
In her devotional book, Brenda Walsh, wrote for March 21, 2026, “Value of a Soul.”
Her opening text is found in 1 Kings 2:3. “And keep the charge of the Lord your God: To walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments and His testimonies, as it is written in the book of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn:”
People spend their whole life trying to achieve success through fame, fortune, or power. But what is the real measurement of success? For some, it is how much money they have in the bank, driving a fancy car, sending their kids to the best schools, or having power and influence. But no matter how high a status you reach in the eyes of man, nothing is more important than the value of your soul.
The Bible says in Mark 8: 36-37, What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? Mark 8: 36-37, ESV The devil uses the trappings of this world to blind you from what really matters, and that’s….staying close to God. You can’t begin to even imagine how much you mean to our heavenly Father until you think of His great sacrifice on Calvary. Only then can you start to comprehend just how much He loves you.
Are you wondering how much your soul is worth? Well, Jesus loves you so much that He left the splendour of heaven to give His life, dying on a cross so that you can live with Him for all eternity. You just can’t pay a higher price than that!!!
