MANILA, Philippines — Filipino-American cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw is the first woman to win Best Cinematography for her work on Michael B. Jordan-starrer period vampire film “Sinners.”

Arkapaw picked up the award after Ryan Coogler, who also directed the film, won Best Original Screenplay. Arkapaw and Coogler collaborated on another hit, the Marvel movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

“I really want all the women in the room to stand up because I feel like I don’t get here without you guys,” Arkapaw said during her speech.

Arkapaw is Filipino from her mother’s side and African American Creole on her father’s side.

She is also just the fourth woman nominated for the cinematography Oscar after Rachel Morrison in 2018 for “Mudbound,” Ari Wegner in 2021 for “The Power of the Dog,” and Mandy Walker the following year for “Elvis.” All the category’s winners have been men.

“Sinners” scored a whopping 16 nominations for this year’s Academy Awards.(K.A. Llemit.Philstar)
