The Barretto clan faced conflict following the passing of their eldest sibling, Mito, with Marjorie speaking out against statements made by their mother, Inday.
This wasn’t the first time grief stirred up family disputes—the Barrettos were also involved in a widely reported feud in 2019 after the death of their patriarch. But just months before that, sisters Marjorie and Gretchen clashed and aired their disputes on social media amid the controversy surrounding Marjorie’s daughter, Julia.
“Ghost Writer” vs “Ghost Buster”
According to a previous article by ABS-CBN.com in August 2019, during the Gerald Anderson-Bea Alonzo controversy, where Julia was rumored to have been the third party, Gretchen and Claudine sent flowers to Bea. Marjorie, meanwhile, threatened legal action against anyone sharing photos of Julia and Gerald, denying any relationship between the two.
In August, Gretchen accused her niece Julia of using a ghost writer for her statement and publicly supported Bea, posting “TEAM BEA FOR THE WIN.” Marjorie defended Julia, changing her Instagram bio to “Ghost Writer,” while Gretchen playfully changed hers to “Ghost Buster.”
The Viral Wake Incident
During the wake of their father, Miguel, who was also known as Mike, the Barretto siblings were involved in public disputes that attracted widespread attention. On October 16, 2019, Gretchen arrived at the wake and shared a warm hug with their mother, Inday, while then-President Rodrigo Duterte intervened to encourage reconciliation between Gretchen and Marjorie. Marjorie, however, reportedly refused to comply. According to Gretchen herself, as reported by ABS-CBN News on October 18, it was President Duterte, who asked Gretchen and Marjorie to shake hands for “the sake of respect” for their father. Marjorie, however, was allegedly not happy about Gretchen being there.
The following evening, reports surfaced of a confrontation between Claudine and Marjorie. Claudine claimed that Julia got involved, allegedly hurling insults and physically assaulting her. Julia, on the other hand, denied participating in the dispute between her mother and aunt, according to ABS-CBN News on October 21.
Social media posts from both Claudine and Marjorie further highlighted their ongoing disagreements, including accusations tied to family tensions and visits from Gretchen’s associates.
Marjorie explained in interviews that her actions were about protecting the family and maintaining respect for their late father, while disputing claims that she was at fault for the conflict. Gretchen responded on social media, defending herself and clarifying details regarding those involved.
Around the same time, Julia apologized on social media to her grandfather, saying sorry that his wake “turned into a circus,’” as reported by PUSH ABS-CBN.
he Passing of Mito Barretto
In September 2025, media outlets including PUSH ABS-CBNreported that Claudine Barretto and her older sister Marjorie shared heartfelt memories of their late brother, Mito Barretto, on Instagram.
Claudine recalled a major argument earlier this year that nearly led her to take legal action, and reminded followers to cherish their loved ones and practice forgiveness. Marjorie also asked her followers to keep their brother in their prayers. The cause of Mito Barretto’s death has not yet been released.
Just a month after Mito’s passing, Marjorie Barretto spoke out against their mother, Inday. She said she was shocked to hear her mother claim in an interview with Ogie Diaz they were not on good terms, especially after spending time together during Mito’s wake and inurnment.
Marjorie also questioned the timing and intent of the interview, feeling it seemed like an attempt to stir conflict while the family was still grieving. She even revealed that Inday had allegedly advised her not to reconcile with her two sisters, adding, “In the interview, my mom implied I was ‘inggit,’ distant, and cold, then said she loved me. I’m confused because if she truly knew me, she’d know those words are the farthest from the truth.”
Meanwhile, Marjorie Barretto’s children—Dani, Julia, and Leon—have all publicly shown their support for their mother, commenting on her social media post after she spoke out in October 2025.
On January 29, 2026, the family confirmed the passing of matriarch Estrella “Inday” Barretto, who died at 89. Prior to her death, Claudine Barretto and Joaquin Barretto shared emotional posts on social media reflecting on their final moments with her.
Claudine later confirmed that the siblings came together to care for their mother.
“To my Brother & all my sisters thank you 🙏 Magulo man po kami but in grief we are all united. We all did our part. JJ, Michie, Gia, G, Marjorie & all the apos pati apo sa tuhod. Pantay pantay inalagaan ang mommy. We choose peace over everything,” Claudine wrote.
She went on assuring their late mother that they’re going to be okay.“Goodbye Mom. We will be ok. How can we not? WE ARE INDAY BARRETTO’s children. The strongest most loving Mother anyone could ask for,” she added.
Marjorie, who just recently had a feud with their mother, also addressed the loss on social media.“Our Mom, Estrella ‘Inday’ Barretto, passed away peacefully last January 29. It took me some time to post, as I was still processing every emotion while making funeral arrangements. These feelings were made even more raw by the loss of my brother just four months ago,” she shared.
“They say we don’t always get closure in life. Knowing God was calling my mom home, I believe He gave me something even greater, the chance to be with her at her bedside, a grace that allowed me to heal.
