Alliance Philippines – Vancouver Filipino Language School welcomed Rechie Valdez, Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism, on February 17 for Salo-Salo Presents: Meryenda with Minister Rechie Valdez.
The gathering brought together Filipino community leaders from across British Columbia, along with youth, educators, and entrepreneurs, for an afternoon of meryenda and conversation focused on identity, women’s leadership, and small business.
Minister Valdez reflected on her journey from entrepreneurship to public office, becoming Canada’s first Filipina federal Cabinet minister. She spoke about pivoting with purpose and shared how building a Filipino fusion baking business not only launched her entrepreneurial path but also helped her reconnect with her cultural roots.
Ben Luchina, Operations Manager of Alliance Philippines, underscored the importance of representation. “As a 1.5 generation Filipino Canadian youth, seeing her bridge that gap, especially considering the decades of underrepresentation since Rey Pagtakhan is a powerful reminder that representation matters.”
Attendees emphasized the value of direct dialogue between federal leaders and grassroots Filipino organizations. The event concluded with networking and continued discussions on leadership, cultural visibility, and strengthening community connections across British Columbia.
