BANGKOK. — It was a triple joy for the triathletes, twice the thrill for the muay thai bets, and an extension of the country’s reign in one of the esports tournaments.
Amid the oven-hot weather, the trio of Kira Ellis, Raven Alcoseba, and Kim Mangrobang shone the brightest, giving the Philippines an early gold in the triathlon women’s team relay Wednesday at the Leam Mae Phim Beach in Rayong.
The women’s squad clocked one hour, 10 minutes, and 14 seconds to stamp its mark in the 300-meter swim, 8K bike, and 2K run.
Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino hailed the triathletes’ triumphs and the esports gold in MLBB where the Pinoys proved too much for Malaysia with a 4-0 wipeout victory at the Chulalongkorn University Book Center here.
The Smart-backed Sibol squad was composed of Sanford Vinuya, Kiel Soriano, Karl Nepomuceno, Jaypee Dela Cruz, Alston Pabico and John Carlo Roma.
“Magandang araw ito ngayon. Isa sa pinaka-magandang araw natin,” Tolentino said.
“Malaki ang supporter natin, Smart, nandiyan kasi. Expected pero sa babaeng laban may laban kaunti pero dito expected,” added the hardworking POC chief.
The Triathlon Association of the Philippines’ gambit on fielding Ellis in lieu of Erika Burgos at the last-minute worked wonders in the 10-nation biennial meet supported by the POC and the Philippine Sports Commission.
“It was a last-minute change in the schedule,” Ellis, 19, said. “I wasn’t supposed to race, but then we thought, if I start for the team and Raven finishes with the team, we really have a strong chance at getting gold. It worked out. We tried to strategize and get a gap for whoever and try to lead through the entire race.” (M. Jugado/Malaya)
