Vancouver, B.C. – December 8, 2025 – On Wednesday, the City of Vancouver’s Standing Committee on Finance and City Services will be deliberating the motion “Promoting Cultural Inclusion and Economic Vitality: Advancing the Main Street Filipino Cultural Centre and Hotel Project”. During the meeting for the original motion presented by Mayor Ken Sim and Councillor Lenny Zhou, an overwhelming majority of speakers, representing members of the Filipino community from across B.C. and allies from several diverse communities, spoke in favour of the motion.
In response, the Filipino Legacy Society issues the following statement:
“We call on all members of Vancouver City Council to pass the motion and help our community realize our dream of building a home in Vancouver. This has been a complex journey, and we are committed to transparency and answering any questions from the community and members of the public.
“The motion will initiate formal review and feasibility work, including staff analysis, regulatory scrutiny, public consultation and a public hearing. It does not approve development, density, funding or construction. “The Filipino Legacy Society wants to create a cultural centre that is set up for success. To operate and provide quality services, including to our community’s most vulnerable, the centre must have a sustainable funding source. The hotel model is innovative and will provide critical operational funds for the Filipino Cultural Centre.
“We are partnered with our developer because of their longstanding vision of building this project as early as 2009. Unfortunately, like many in the sector, they were not immune to COVID-19 disruptions, including delays, restructuring, litigation and financial challenges. The developer has worked to ensure these issues are resolved, and we are confident this will not affect the project’ s delivery.
“Our message to Vancouver City Council is clear: It’s time to build the Filipino Cultural Centre in Vancouver. We are thankful to those in the community and on council who have continued to keep this dream alive.”
