The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) has pledged support for the family of late Alas Pilipinas pool member Ike Barilea.

PNVF President Ramon “Tats” Suzara confirmed the development in a message to ABS-CBN News, but did not give further details.

“We will support the family and the funeral,” he said in the message.

The national team announced on Tuesday that the 21-year-old player had passed away.

Barilea figured in a vehicular accident on Tuesday afternoon in Cadiz City, as his motorcycle was hit and run over by a bus.

Police said Barilea was riding his motorcycle when it was struck by a bus.

Cadiz Police Deputy Chief Lt. Mansueto De Jose said initial investigation showed that both vehicles were traveling in the same direction when Barilea signaled to turn left.

The bus driver reportedly miscalculated his maneuver and hit the motorcycle.

Video footage circulating online showed that Barilea was still alive when responders brought him to a nearby hospital around noon, but he was later pronounced dead at about 4 p.m.

The bus driver is now in police custody. Authorities said charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide are being prepared, pending further investigation.

Barilea was called up for the Alas Men’s pool for the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, under coach Angiolino Frigoni.

He was also part of the Alas Pilipinas-Cignal team that competed in the 2025 AVC Men’s Volleyball Champions League, and he played for 1Silay Volleyball Club in the 2025 PNVF U21 National Volleyball Championships Men’s Division.
