Vancouver city council is expected to vote in the next few weeks on a motion by Mayor Ken Sim to establish a Filipino cultural centre.
An affirmative vote is anticipated amid the strong support from the Filipino community for Sim’s motion.
Sim is presenting the motion together with Councillor Lenny Zhou, in what is considered a significant milestone in delivering a long-awaited cultural centre for the Filipino community.
Sim’s motion has generated widespread endorsement from the community, particularly the United Filipino Canadian Associations in BC (UFCABC), the biggest coalition of organizations in the community.
First in the line to express support were sister organizations One Filipino Cooperative of BC (One FilCoop) and FilCooperative One Housing Society (OHS).
Next were the Fil-Can Cultural Heritage Society (FCCHS) and the True North Hinirang Eagles Club (Eagles).
More letters of support came to Mayor Sim and city councillors from the following: Cebuano Society of Canada, Seniors Intercultural Society of BC, Global Multicultural Affairs Society, Philippine Bagong Pag-Asa Society of BC, and Dimasalang III International Artist Group.
Mayor Sim’s motion has identified the Filipino Legacy Society (FLS) as the principal organization to take the project forward, in cooperation with different associations in the community.
The full text of the mayor’s motion is expected to be published in the coming days.
Mayor Sim’s office has held extensive consultations with community associations regarding the planned Filipino cultural centre.
