Mel is one of a few uber talented Filipino makeup artists tasked to make us all look good. He was chosen to be one of the makeup artists at the recently concluded ASAP 30 in Vancouver. In this interview, Mel shares his journey from humble beginnings to working with top talents, offering insights on inspiration, identity, and the evolving world of beauty.
How did you get started on your career as a makeup artist? Was it here in Canada or in the Philippines?
My passion for makeup began in high school, where I took an elective course in cosmetology. Since then, I’ve enjoyed doing makeup for friends and family during events and special occasions. When I moved to Canada, I wanted to find a creative outlet to express my artistry, which led me to the Global Makeup Artist Program at Blanche Macdonald Centre. I draw inspiration from drag artists, special effects makeup, and editorial fashion magazines, all of which continue to influence and refine my style today.
Why did you take up this career? Do you have a day job or this full time?
I am a full-time Registered Nurse at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, and I pursued a career in makeup to express my passion for the arts and to fulfill my dream as a Filipino makeup artist. I previously worked for MAC Cosmetics while balancing my nursing role and freelance makeup projects. Although managing both careers was challenging, I chose to focus on my nursing profession and freelance makeup artistry, allowing me to continue doing what I love, caring for people and creating beauty through art.
Why do you think Pinoys are so good at this form of art?
Filipinos are naturally artistic and talented. We are deeply passionate about our craft and take pride in everything we create. We excel because we strive for excellence, continuously learning, practicing, and perfecting our skills. Filipinos shine in many fields around the world, especially in healthcare and the arts, where dedication and creativity come together in everything we do.
What do you want to work on next? What are your other projects?
My dream is to work in editorial and fashion makeup magazines, collaborating with creative teams that celebrate artistry and self-expression. When I’m not in my nursing scrubs, I love spending my free time doing bridal makeup and working on Filipino events, concerts, and pageants, moments that allow me to connect with my community and bring beauty to life through my craft.
