American comedian and TV host Conan O’Brien was spotted wearing a polo shirt inspired by the iconic blanket pattern commonly found in Filipino households.
Kapuso actor Dennis Trillo posted snaps on Friday, October 17, of himself with the legendary comedian on the set of the action-drama series “Sanggang-Dikit FR.”
The series follows two law enforcers, each burdened by personal loss, who are forced to work together when a high-profile murder implicates a famous action star.
Dennis’ wife, Jennylyn Mercado, was also on set.
“Taping day [with] Conan the Bar Brien,” the actor wrote in a Facebook post.
His photos included Conan participating in what appeared to be an action scene, and later, being arrested.
According to GMA Entertainment, Conan will have a cameo role in the Kapuso series.
The comedian is in the Philippines to film his travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go.”
Dennis’ post has earned over 4,900 likes and reactions, along with more than 100 comments, many from Filipinos who could not help but notice Conan’s eye-catching “kumot” shirt.
“Conan! Your polo shirt reminds me of my old blanket,” a Pinoy wrote with a laughing emoji.
“‘Yan ‘yong kumot na tinatago-tago ni mama sa cabinet…” another quipped.
“Bakit ginawang polo ‘yung kumot ng nanay ko?” a different Facebook user asked.
“Conan wearing the pambansang kumot,” another Pinoy wrote.
Conan’s shirt features a colorful striped pattern inspired by the cotton blankets commonly found in Filipino households, a design that has become a playful cultural reference in recent years.
In 2023, social media personality Sassa Gurl made waves when she wore a custom pink floral dress with the same blanket-inspired pattern at the Preview Ball.
A local clothing brand also previously gained attention for its “Milagros” shirt design, which paid homage to the familiar textile.
Iconic ‘kumot’
The blanket with such a pattern is called the “333 blanket” or the “sparrow blanket” in the Philippines.
It is recognizable among Filipinos for its stripes and intricate floral designs scattered across parts of the fabric.
The blanket usually comes in white and is paired with other colors like pink, blue, or orange, among others.
Despite its commonness in Filipino households, the blanket actually originates from Malaysia, where it is called “Selimut Lejen,” meaning “legendary blanket.”
According to TV personality Kim Atienza‘s report on GMA’s “24 Oras,” the fabric is called Malaysian Batik, which comes from Malaysia’s East Coast.
