A tertiary hospital in Cebu has apologized after one of its employees allegedly mocked BINI member Maloi Ricalde’s emotional reaction to being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
Chong Hua Hospital released a statement on Thursday, October 9, after Blooms—the fandom of the P-pop girl group—called out an employee said to be a nurse for ridiculing the singer online.
Screenshots alleged that the female nurse reshared a video showing Maloi being emotional when the latter discovered she has PCOS, a hormonal condition affecting women of reproductive age.
Screenshots circulating on social media showed the nurse resharing a clip from “BINI World Tour Stories” where Maloi tearfully talked about discovering her condition, which she described as her “greatest fear.”
Maloi opening up about PCOS
In the documentary, Maloi said she had always dreamed of having a large family and was devastated to learn she has PCOS, a hormonal disorder that affects many women of reproductive age.
“We found out that I have PCOS. Greatest fear ko [‘yun], sabi ko, mawala na cellphone ko, iPad, lahat ng mga material things ko, ‘wag lang ako magka-PCOS. Ganun ‘yung thinking ko,” she said in the “BINI World Tour Stories” documentary.
“Ang sad lang kasi as someone na nanggaling sa malaki at masayang pamilya, syempre, nakikita ko na sarili ko na, ‘Ah, someday, ganito. Gusto ko rin ng ganito,’” Maloi added.
Part of the documentary was posted by a BINI fan account.
This reached the attention of the female nurse, who allegedly wrote, “OA HAHAHA”
“OA” is short for overreacting or overacting.
The nurse also reportedly tagged a friend and wrote, “Did you also act like that when you found out you had PCOS?”
Hospital distances from nurse’s remarks
After fans identified the employee as part of Chong Hua Hospital, the medical institution issued a public statement disowning her remarks.
“At Chong Hua Hospital, we believe in understanding, compassion, and respect for everyone,” it said.
“We understand the concerns raised over a recent social media comment and strongly emphasize that the views expressed by one of our employees do not reflect the values of our institution. Thank you for your continued trust,” the hospital added.
“This comment by one of our employees was an isolated personal expression that does not reflect the values of Chong Hua Hospital. As a healthcare institution, we uphold respect, empathy, and sensitivity toward all individuals, especially those with health conditions,” it said in its statement.
The hospital said the incident is “now being addressed internally” in line with its “code of conduct and social media policies.”
“Chong Hua Hospital remains committed to fostering understanding, compassion, and respect for all,” it concluded.
What we know about PCOS
The World Health Organization said that PCOS is a health condition affecting women’s reproductive health.
It can cause hormonal imbalances, irregular periods, excess androgen levels, and cysts in the ovaries.
The condition is also the leading cause of infertility among women.
PCOS is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, although symptoms can be improved through lifestyle changes, medications, and fertility treatments. (J. Malasig/Interaksyon)
