VANCOUVER, BC — From church choir in Caloocan City to the mainstage of ASAP 30, rising Filipino-Canadian artist Argel MDR is set to make his biggest appearance yet — performing alongside legendary OPM icons Erik Santos and Regine Velasquez at this weekend’s ASAP 30 celebration in Canada.

Recently named the 2025 FVMA R&B Artist of the Year and a Top 10 Finalist in CBC’s Searchlight competition, Argel’s story is one of talent, tenacity, and deep community roots.

“When Tofer Vengco first reached out through Instagram, I couldn’t believe it,” Argel recalls. “When he finally called to deliver the official invite, I was in shock. These are the artists that inspired me to pursue a career in the arts — artists I grew up watching and listening to. I still can’t believe I’m a part of it.”

A proud advocate for Filipino-Canadian identity, anti-racism, and youth mentorship, Argel says this moment is more than just a personal milestone — it’s deeply symbolic.

“To perform with these icons is cathartic,” he says. “It validates everything I’ve worked for, and more importantly, it’s about visibility. Representation matters. I hope my performance inspires young Filipino-Canadians to tell their stories and believe in their dreams.”

🎤 A Musical Journey Rooted in Community and Culture

Argel began singing at age three in his local church choir and started songwriting by 12. After immigrating to Canada at 15, he found a new path in music and theatre, performing at community events, charity concerts, and competitions including WCOPA, Music BC Songwriting Challenge, and CBC Toyota Searchlight.

In parallel with his music, Argel has also built a distinguished theatre career, becoming one of the first Filipino-Canadians to play lead roles in major Western Canadian productions such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Metro Theatre), Seussical the Musical! (Align Entertainment), and Elf! The Musical (Arts Club).

“I never thought that a kid from Caloocan would one day be cast in those roles, let alone perform on the same stage as Regine Velasquez,” he reflects.

🎶 The ASAP 30 Performance

For his ASAP 30 debut, Argel will be performing “Pagbigyang Muli” in a duet with Erik Santos, followed by a medley of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “In Your Eyes” alongside the Asia’s Songbird herself — Regine Velasquez.

“The ASAP team curated all the songs and arrangements, and I’m incredibly grateful for how thoughtful and supportive they’ve been,” says Argel. “They’ve made this experience feel like a dream.”

With rehearsals now underway, Argel is soaking in every moment and hoping to capture behind-the-scenes memories of what he calls a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience.

“Meeting these artists and sharing a stage with them — I’m just a fan who gets to live his dream. I’m nervous, but also incredibly honoured.”

💬 A Message to Filipino Youth and the Community

At the heart of Argel’s music is a deep sense of purpose: to uplift Filipino-Canadian youth, to celebrate his roots, and to empower the next generation of artists.

“I hope my performance tells young Filipinos: keep dreaming. Life isn’t always easy, but remember who you are, and take care of your well-being along the way.”

As for what’s next, Argel hopes this platform opens more doors to share his original music globally — and to invest in the development of other emerging Filipino talents.

“The Filipino music scene in Vancouver is vibrant and evolving. I want to continue mentoring young IBPOC artists and help build a stronger foundation for those just starting. With more support and resources, we can launch more artists into global success.”

🙏 Gratitude and Looking Ahead

Argel ends with a heartfelt message:

“To my family, my supporters, and the Filipino community — maraming maraming salamat po. Your love and encouragement have carried me through every stage of this journey. I’m here because of you, and I will always strive to make you proud.”

Catch Argel MDR at ASAP 30 this Saturday, as he joins some of the biggest names in OPM in an unforgettable celebration of Filipino talent, culture, and community.
