City of Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke launched the Drive & Dish Basketball Mayor’s Cup with a ceremonial tipoff on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at Johnston Heights Secondary Gym. In her opening remarks she told youth athletes that sports are “one of the best trainings in your life,” teaching discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship — and building character whether you win or lose. Mayor Locke also reaffirmed the City’s commitment to expanding recreational facilities across Surrey.
John Raganit, President of Drive & Dish Basketball, thanked Mayor Locke and the crowd for attending and witnessing her toss of the ball. Also present were Noemi Victorino (City of Surrey), Rey Fortaleza (CEO, ReyFort Media), Lita Cabal (FCCHS), Araceli Fortaleza (FCCHS) and Janice Lozano (UFCABC). John Raganit expressed appreciation to volunteers, coaches and families and highlighted the event’s role in promoting youth development and community spirit.
The Mayor’s Cup featured competitive games across age groups, awards for standout players and sportsmanship recognitions. Organizers plan to build on this year’s success with expanded programming and partnerships to provide more opportunities and facilities for Surrey youth. (John Raganit)
