New wrestling and community spaces coming to Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex

Surrey, B.C. – Residents and visitors can lace up for free outdoor skating this winter at the new 4,000-square-foot rink at Surrey Civic Plaza. The rink will debut during the City’s Tree Lighting Festival on November 22–23 and operate for 12 weeks as a pilot project.

“We promised to bring more life and joy into City Centre and we’re delivering,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “This outdoor rink turns our civic plaza into a place where families, students, and seniors can gather, celebrate the season, and support local businesses. It’s another concrete step toward a vibrant entertainment district that invites people to stay a little longer and come back more often.”

Skaters will find a welcoming atmosphere with food trucks, hot chocolate, comfortable seating, and on-site staff providing skate and helmet rentals and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all.

“Public spaces like this create shared memories,” added Mayor Locke. “Council is focused on practical, people-first amenities that make Surrey an even better place to live.”

As a pilot, the rink will help the City evaluate programming, attendance, and economic benefits in support of Council’s broader City Centre activation strategy. Additional details, including hours and programming, will be shared in early November.

New wrestling and community spaces coming to Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex

The City of Surrey will transform 6,500 square feet on the upper level of the Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex (Fleetwood) into new wrestling facilities with spectator seating and flexible multi-use rooms to host a range of community programs.

“Fleetwood is growing fast, with 15,000 new homes and major transit on the way, and Council is investing ahead of that growth,” said Councillor Gordon Hepner, Chair, Parks & Recreation Committee. “These modern, accessible spaces will serve youth and families, support the development of wrestling in Surrey, and give community groups room to thrive.”

 The renovation will deliver:

  • A dedicated wrestling area designed for training and competition
  • Spectator seating to host meets and community events
  • Flexible program rooms for all-ages recreation, fitness, culture, and community gatherings

“This project reflects Council’s commitment to building complete, connected neighbourhoods,” Councillor Hepner added. “From sport to seniors’ programming, we’re making sure Surrey residents have quality spaces close to home.”

Design and scheduling will prioritize minimizing disruptions to existing services. Project updates, construction timelines, and opening details will be shared as planning progresses. ( City of Surrey)
