October 3, 2025– A documentary about legendary tattoo artist Apo Whang-Od is making its North American premiere to a packed house. Titled “Treasure of the Rice Terraces,” the film dives deep into the life and legacy of one of the Philippines’ most iconic cultural figures. Its premiere at VIFF 2025 (Vancouver International Film Festival) has officially sold out, highlighting the global interest in Whang-Od’s story and the tradition she represents.
Filipino Canadian filmmaker Kent Donguines’ Treasure of the Rice Terraces marks a personal return to the Philippines as he explores Indigenous Kalinga tattooing. At the heart of the story is Apo Whang-Od, now over 100 years old and known as the last mambabatok—a traditional tattooist—from the mountain village of Buscalan in northern Luzon.
Once used to mark warriors and milestones, the art of batok is now a symbol of cultural resilience. Through breathtaking footage of the Cordillera region and intimate interviews, the film captures the beauty and complexity of an ancient practice on the edge of change.
Donguines also shines a light on the new generation of Kalinga women learning from Whang-Od, offering hope that the tradition will continue. The film is both a cultural document and a personal journey—highlighting the importance of roots, identity, and the stories we pass on.
Treasure of the Rice Terraces is already gaining strong buzz, and its sold-out premiere is a proud moment for Filipino representation in global cinema.
