Nasty Boy!
By Robert Waldman
Japan is famous for a number of things. Sake, Sushi, mechanically sound and affordable cars come to mind. And who can forget the revolutionary transistor radio that helped put Sony on the map. Not to mention the Walkman. Towering over all these monumental achievements is – wait for it – Shin Godzilla. Even more surprising is that this new film is actually good – albeit in a campy sort of way. Reward Touchwood PR for bringing this movie to Canada, Get your survival mode on and head out to your local Cineplex Cinema or Landmark Theatre across B.C. while you still can. Oh and it’s in Japanese with English subtitles but don’t let that deter you from seeing this monster on the move, and in the making.
Set in modern day Japan, where else? comes this tale of a nation at a crossroads, and on the brink. Uncertainty confounds the authorities when a bridge suddenly encounters difficulties. Moment by moment more accidents occur until the government is in a panic. And rightfully so.
With the powers that be in a quandary as more unexpected events occur eventually a monster surfaces. Mind you not just any monster. So the Prime Minister’s office tries to find a “fix” to stop the dreaded beast before more prime estate gets blasted to smithereens. Take it all with a big grain of salt.
Shin Godzilla works on two important fronts. First you have the inner turmoil, among the key players as the authorities try to find a way to put this sleeping giant down. And second, all kidding aside, people for decades have flocked to Godzilla to see this strange beast create havoc and chaos. Thankfully directors Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno and their first rate special effects team do not disappoint.
