MANILA, Philippines — Lav Diaz’s historical movie “Magellan,” starring Gael Garcia Bernal, is the Philippines’ official entry to the 98th Academy Awards or Oscars 2026.

The Film Academy of the Philippines revealed Diaz’s film as the country’s official entry to the Best International Feature Film category of the 98th Academy Awards next year.

The announcement was made during the opening of the Philippine Film Industry Month organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines held earlier today at the Shangri-La Plaza.

“Magellan” was voted by Filipino film industry experts. The criteria for selection include aesthetic and technical excellence, embodiment of Filipino value and culture, international appeal, and the capability of the producer to mount an extensive campaign for Academy shorlisting (December 2025) and nomination (February 2026).

“‘Magellan’ is a powerful, poetic film and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Director Lav, Producer Paul Soriano, and the entire cast and crew. We recognize that ‘Magellan’s Oscars journey is only just beginning, and we stand ready to support the film. The Film Academy will work closely with them to navigate the intricacies of the Oscars campaign, and will provide government assistance when needed to ensure their vision is shared with the world,” said Undersecretary Paolo Villaluna, Director-General of the Film Academy.

Reports said that Diaz’s three-hour version that screened at Cannes’ this year received a five-minute standing ovation, which, while not extraordinary, is considered a solid, positive reaction at major festivals.

Last month, the Film Academy revealed that it considered seven films to field at the annual Oscars. These include popular titles “Green Bones,” “Sunshine,” and “Food Delivery.”
