In a rare occasion, Unkabogable Star Vice Ganda enjoyed a delightful evening with the members of the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd) at the Vice Comedy Club in Quezon City on Aug. 14.

The gathering was a lively celebration filled with laughter, delicious food, and captivating entertainment. Vice Ganda, dressed in a stylish black outfit, warmly welcomed the entertainment editors. Guests delighted in the hilarious performances of talented stand-up comedians, creating a night full of joy and unforgettable moments.

Chuck Gomez, Vice Ganda’s publicist, explained that the gathering was a way to express appreciation for the Box Office Hero Award Vice received at the 8th EDDYs Award ceremonies on July 20.

Among Vice Ganda’s friends in attendance at the “thank you party” were actor-businessman RS Francisco and Neil Arce, the husband of actress Angel Locsin.

Vice Ganda’s movie “And the Breadwinner Is …” emerged as the highest-grossing film at the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival. At the 8th EDDYs, Vice was also nominated for Best Actor, which went to Dennis Trillo.

During the 8th EDDYs Award ceremony, Vice Ganda addressed his critics after receiving the “Hero” award from Senator Mark Villar and Roselle Monteverde of Regal Entertainment.

“Many people ask why so many watch my movies. Just like last year, it’s amusing that ‘And The Breadwinner Is’ became the top entry at the Metro Manila Film Festival. Many raise their eyebrows and question, ‘Why do so many people watch my films?’” he said.

“For some critics who believe they are better than others, they claim my films are worthless, meaningless, slapstick, cheap, and solely geared toward a gay audience,” Vice continued.

“But why do people still flock to watch my movies? Because my films, even if they don’t align with critics’ tastes, provide an escape for many ordinary Filipinos.

“Many Filipinos continue to go to cinemas to watch and laugh at my movies to forget their sadness, their problems, and even their dwindling hope in this country, despite the rising costs of movie tickets.

“It’s tough for them; they have little money, yet they still choose to watch films, especially mine, because they want to laugh. They don’t want to critique or overthink during a movie; they seek laughter. That laughter is what helps them get through to live another day, to stand up again, and to find inspiration.

“That’s why I want to express my everlasting gratitude to the Filipino masses. It is the Filipino people who truly love me. I believe so many Filipinos watch my movies because we share a connection. After being part of their daily lives for 17 years on ‘It’s Showtime,’ I have built a meaningful bond with them,” Vice Ganda added. (R. Requintina/mb.com.ph)
