Vancouver, BC — On Sunday, August 17, 2025, Veterans Affairs Canada hosted a poignant commemorative gathering at Sunset Beach—dubbed “Kites for Peace”—to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War.The event, held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featured a vibrant mix of remarks, musical performances, and interactive activities in a celebration of peace, diversity, and Canada’s multicultural tapestry
The Honourable Jill McKnight, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, delivered thoughtful remarks to attendees. The Filipino-Canadian youth ensemble Himig Kabataan Cultural Society (HKCS) graced the occasion with a stirring performance, including singing the anthem, bringing cultural resonance and youthful energy to the program. They also represented the Philippine veterans and heroes of the war.
The event also hosted exhibitors highlighting Canadian military contributions, diversity, and multiculturalism, along with a kite-decorating workshop and the opportunity for visitors to fly their own “Kites for Peace”. (By Rosette Correa)
