In a vibrant show of unity and cultural pride, the Filipino Canadian community gathered to celebrate the birthday of British Columbia Premier David Eby. The event, organized by longtime community leader Boni Barcia, brought together friends, families, and leaders in a joyful evening filled with music, dancing, and the unmistakable warmth of Filipino hospitality.
At the heart of the celebration was a true bayanihan spirit. The feast featured three Cebu-style lechon (roast pigs) surrounded by a colorful spread of homemade Filipino dishes. But this wasn’t just a catered meal—it was a community effort and a labour of love. Guests arrived bringing their specialty dishes to share and helped in setting up, creating a meaningful and collaborative atmosphere.
Premier Eby attended the event with his young daughter, and throughout the evening, he proved to be more than just a political figure. Approachable, down-to-earth, and genuinely engaged, he shared laughter, joined in the line dancing, and embraced the energy of the crowd. His presence gave attendees a glimpse into the human side of leadership, deepening the connection between him and the community.
One of the most memorable highlights of the evening was a surprise musical tribute by Ms. Janice Lozano, fondly known as “Vancouver’s Sweetheart of Song.” She delivered a powerful rendition of the classic “The Impossible Dream”—a timeless anthem of courage and idealism. The song, originally from Man of La Mancha, speaks to the pursuit of justice and hope, even in the face of adversity.
“To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go…”
These lyrics resonated deeply with the night’s theme and Premier Eby’s own journey—from grassroots advocate and human rights lawyer to provincial leader. His work addressing housing affordability, public safety, and social equity mirrors the bold determination captured in the song.
Lozano’s heartfelt performance was more than entertainment—it was a poignant tribute that reminded everyone leadership is not just about policies, but about compassion, vision, and connection. Her emotional delivery moved the audience and highlighted the power of art to uplift and inspire.
Another touching moment came when the crowd gathered around Premier Eby as host Boni Barcia and Mylene Lim brought out not one, but two birthday cakes, as everyone broke into a heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday.” It was a simple act, but it quickly turned into an emotional highlight of the evening, as the Premier smiled warmly, visibly touched by the community’s affection and sincerity.
Present were Mable Elmore, Adrian Dix, Don Davies, Shruti Prakash, Joshi Executive Director, Community and Partner Outreach Office of the Premier Government of B.C, MLA Anne Kang, MLA Raj Chouhan & Speaker of Legislative Assebly, Burnaby Councillor Maita Santiago, Vice Consul Marco Frederick B. Harder Labor Attachè Ma. Celeste M. Valderrama and other dignitaries.
For the Filipino Canadian community, the evening underscored the importance of cultural pride, mutual respect, and shared dreams. “The Impossible Dream” served as a unifying message: that no goal is too distant when pursued together with heart and purpose.
This celebration was more than just a birthday party. It was a reflection of strength, resilience, and the hope for a future where leadership and community walk hand in hand. As music and laughter echoed late into the evening, the impact of the night was undeniable—one of unity, joy, and lasting connection. Photos from UFCABC
