Himig Kabataan Cultural Society: Voices of Hope for Lapu-Lapu Block Party Victims

Since the tragic events at the Lapu-Lapu Block Party, one youth group has consistently stepped forward to uplift and unite the community through the power of music: the Himig Kabataan Cultural Society. These talented young performers have become a steady source of hope and healing, answering every call to perform in support of the tragedy’s victims.

Their journey of service began at the block party itself, where they performed hours before the heartbreaking turn of events. Undeterred, they have since taken the stage at numerous high-profile events, including leading the national anthems at a Vancouver Whitecaps game, Sofronio Vasquez’ concert, participating in Songs of Kapwa, UFCABC’s 10th Anniversary Gala, Never Dim My Light with Juno-nominee singer songwriter Warren Dean Flandez, and an upcoming concert at the Scottish Cultural Centre entitled Melodies for the Soul. Their dedication will continue with their upcoming performance at a major benefit concert at Rogers Arena.

“We have never even thought about the amount of time we have poured into this,” Bea Correa, Executive Producer and Founder of HKCS said. “For us, we know how music is a big part of Filipino culture and way of life, and we think of our participation as a small contribution to the healing of our community.”

The group of young Canoys, ages sixteen to twenty-three, see their role in the healing process as vital to their Filipino roots – the roots of kapwa.

“We are doing bayanihan in our own little way,” Bea adds.

They also did a choir workshop for Canadian Filipino children at Precious Blood Parish and performed for the diplomatic corps at the Philippine Consulate reception for the celebration of the 127th Philippine Independence Day.

Their performances will continue in the month of July for fundraisers for certain parishes, at Philippine Historama, and other events culminating with their September 7 headliner concert at the Surrey Arts Centre.

Performing continuously since May, these youth have shown extraordinary commitment and compassion. Himig Kabataan is more than a cultural group—they are the musical heartbeat of a grieving community. Their resilience and artistry not only honor those lost but also inspire healing and unity. In every note they sing, they remind us that even in sorrow, there is strength—and in youth, there is unwavering hope.
