Burnaby, BC, CA — The 78th Tony Awards celebrated Broadway’s finest, and among the night’s biggest winners were Filipino-Americans Nicole Scherzinger and Darren Criss, who took home prestigious acting honours. Their victories marked a historic moment for representation, showcasing the talent of Filipino artists on the global stage.
Scherzinger, best known for her time with the Pussycat Dolls, won Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. In an emotional acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying, “Growing up, I always felt like I didn’t belong, but you all have made me feel like I belong, and I have come home at last.” She dedicated her win to dreaming artists who feel out of place, urging them to keep pushing and advancing.
Meanwhile, Criss, who rose to fame through Glee, secured Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his role in Maybe Happy Ending. Conrad Ricamora received a nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play for Oh Mary!, while Clint Ramos was recognized for Best Costume Design of a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending.
