Hand In Hand Under One Flag

The flag raising ceremony is more than just a ritual we attend at the beginning of school days, national events, or formal programs. It is a symbolic tradition that instills a sense of identity, unity, and pride among us Filipinos. For many of us, including myself, the ceremony has been a constant part of our lives since childhood—from elementary and high school to college, and even in various organizations we have joined. Initially, it may have seemed like a procedural gesture that simply marked the beginning of an event. However, over time, one comes to understand the deeper meaning it carries—one that connects us to our nation, our people, and our shared history.

The act of raising the Philippine flag in synchrony with the singing of our national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, evokes a strong sense of nationalism. It is a reminder of the sacrifices of our forebears, the victories that shaped our nation, and the values we continue to uphold. Whether held in the open skies or within the walls of an auditorium, the sight of our flag and the sound of our anthem stir emotions that words alone cannot describe. As we face the flag, we do not only honor a piece of fabric but the very soul of the Filipino people—our resilience, our freedom, and our aspirations for a better future.

Flag raising ceremonies also foster unity and discipline. Regardless of our differences in region, language, or background, we stand together in reverence during this solemn occasion. It teaches us to pause, reflect, and acknowledge the greater collective we belong to. Especially in schools, the ceremony reinforces civic consciousness among the youth, helping them appreciate their role in the nation’s progress. It nurtures in them the values of respect, order, and responsibility—qualities essential to both personal and national development.

For Filipinos living abroad, such as here in British Columbia, Canada, the significance of the flag raising ceremony becomes even more profound. In a foreign land where we are surrounded by diverse cultures, raising our flag and singing our anthem allow us to affirm who we are and where we come from. It becomes an anchor to our roots and a powerful expression of our identity. It is during these moments that we feel a stronger sense of connection to our culture and traditions, no matter how far we are from the archipelago we call home.

Here in British Columbia, as  we gather to raise our national color during the celebration of our Independence Day, we are not just performing a formality—we are affirming our shared heritage. At every flag raising, we symbolically join hands in unity, upholding the Filipino values that continue to guide us: love of country, respect for one another, and a strong sense of community. These ceremonies are opportunities to educate the younger generation, especially Filipino-Canadians, about their cultural legacy. It reminds them that being Filipino is not just a matter of origin, but a lifelong responsibility to carry the pride and dignity of our people wherever we are in the world.
