In a shocking announcement, former eight-division World Champion Manny Pacquiao is set to make his ring return July 19th. Going straight for another belt, Pacquiao will face WBC welterweight title-holder, Mario Barrios. The champion, who reigns from San Antonio, turned 30 earlier this month. In comparison, Pacquiao turned 46 in December.
Pacquiao has not fought since a lopsided decision 2021 loss to Yordenis Ugas, who later dropped his belt to Barrios. By fight night, that will be nearly 4 years since Pacquiao has participated in a “real fight”. While he had exhibitions against DK Yoo and Rukiya Anpo, those contests were only 6 and 3 rounds respectively.
While there are certainly questions about Pacquiao’s skill level, physical conditioning, and past performances, there are also questions about his mentality and motivation. Is this event simply about a pay day? Is it an opportunity to fight on the same card as his son? Is this a real last grasp at greatness? These questions and more will be answered on July 19th.
