MANILA, Philippines — Speaker Martin Romualdez is likely to retain his position coming into the 20th Congress, following a manifesto of support already signed by 278 lawmakers, House deputy speaker and Quezon 2nd district Rep. David Suarez said yesterday.
According to Suarez, the 278 signatories include four out of the six Liberal Party (LP) members in the House of Representatives.
“As of today, 285 House members have expressed support for Speaker Romualdez, with 278 lawmakers having already signed formal declarations,” Suarez said.
“The unity we now see among House members reflects a collective commitment to stability, progress, and responsible governance under his stewardship,” he added.
Earlier this month, Vice President Sara Duterte floated the idea of her brother, Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte gunning for either the speakership of the House or the minority leader position – seen by observers as the Dutertes’ attempt to consolidate power against the Marcos administration.
