Richmond, BC – On June 7, 2025, local artist and advocate Karissa Narukami will be honoured with the Youth Award in the Arts category at the UFCABC Heritage Dinner, to be held at Continental Seafood Restaurant in Richmond. This recognition highlights not only her exceptional artistic talent but also her deep commitment to community service, particularly among children and youth with developmental disabilities.
Born and raised in Richmond, Karissa has used art as a powerful form of expression since childhood. Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), she discovered early on that creativity offered her a voice when words could not. With no formal art training, Karissa has developed a unique and expressive style, transforming emotion and imagination into stunning visual works. Her art speaks of resilience, self-discovery, and hope—resonating deeply with audiences from all walks of life.
Karissa is also the founder of The Karissa Narukami Autism Foundation, a charitable initiative dedicated to empowering youth with autism and developmental challenges through free art programs. Her foundation provides accessible classes, donates art supplies internationally, and has launched feeding programs in underserved communities. Through her tireless efforts, Karissa continues to build inclusive spaces where creativity becomes a tool for healing, connection, and confidence.
Her work has been recognized locally and globally. She has received numerous awards in the visual arts, been honoured by civic and provincial leaders, and was recently selected for an extraordinary honour—her artwork is part of NASA’s Lunar Codex project, preserving her creations on the Moon for future generations.
Karissa’s story is one of triumph over adversity, and her contributions reflect the very spirit of the UFCABC Heritage Dinner—celebrating heritage, unity, and the power of giving back. She reminds us that barriers can be broken with compassion, creativity, and courage.
“If I can do it, so can you,” says Karissa, whose work continues to inspire hope and purpose across communities.
