Joe Larano Jr. is a Filipino-Canadian architect and artist based in Richmond, British Columbia. Since relocating to Canada in 1998, he has combined his architectural expertise with a passion for sketching, capturing both natural and urban landscapes. His book, Urban Sketching: Capturing the Views Around Us, serves as an educational resource, encouraging individuals to engage in urban sketching. He is a columnist at Philippines Asian News Today writing stories about Filipino-Canadians’ struggles, dreams, passion and quest for success and recognition.
Larano’s architectural career is marked by a commitment to community and cultural heritage. He has been involved in projects that emphasize disaster-resilient design, sharing insights on mitigating the impacts of natural disasters through architecture. His work reflects a dedication to creating structures that are both functional and responsive to environmental challenges. Recently he was honored to be included in the list of 50 Notable Architects in the Philippines during the 50th Founding Anniversary celebrations of the United Architects of the Philippines in April 2025.
He is the founding president of United Architects of the Philippines British Columbia Chapter. He currently serves as a member in the Richmond Public Art Advisory Committee. Beyond his architectural and artistic endeavors, Larano contributes to the discourse on Filipino identity and heritage. Through his writings, such as articles in The Manila Times, he explores the evolving roles of Filipino architects and the essence of life from a cultural perspective. His multifaceted career underscores a deep engagement with both his professional field and cultural roots.
